Painting: Makan Emadi, 2004/2008
Makan Emadi wanted to prove that Muslim women can be represented according to the canons of pin-up of 40 and 50 years of the twentieth century. It's easy just to stage a calendar sheet, making combining the hijab at the implication inherent in the proverbial glamorous West.
series "Islamic Erotica" was initiated in 2002 following the events of September 11 last year . "Femme Fatale" in conjunction with "Terrorists & Freedom Fighters" would be the next step.
''O Prophet! tell thy wives and thy daughters and the women of the believers who cover themselves with when they leave their webs, it is more convenient to distinguish themselves from others and not molested: and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.'' ( Koran, 33rd Sura, verse 59)
Makan Emadi on the series" Islamic Erotica ":" As an atheist, I was always critical of the state of my country and the theocracies of the world. However, it was not entirely converted to the West. Just because he hated the Iranian government did not have to ignore the hypocrisy of imperialist interventions sponsored by the name of democracy.
" In this series I wanted to examine gender issues from both sides of the aisle. Combining the seemingly contradictory images of Islamic dress with pin-up art from the U.S. we get the nightmare vision of the future that is possible in the Middle East, such as globalization and attempt to dominate the American and European traditions fundamentalists deployed in the region. " (Makan Emadi, 2009)
